Woodwind Tuition with Julia Middleton

Julia Middleton

After having a music-filled school life (choral singing and clarinet) I went to Durham University to study French and started dabbling in jazz, having been enthusiastic from a young age after listening to Benny Goodman. In 199I I moved to Paris where I taught English and started to fulfil my ambition: learning jazz on the soprano saxophone, inspired by the wonderful tone and melodic playing of Branford Marsalis on Sting's albums.

I studied jazz in Paris for 4 years and on returning to the UK continued my studies and formed a saxophone quartet with John O' Neill (author of the best-selling 'Jazz Method for Saxophone' series). I also had the privilege of being taught by numerous highly regarded British Jazz musicians on Wavendon and Royal Academy summer courses.

In 2002, having spent several years gigging around Oxfordshire in various jazz combos I attended Trinity College of Music where I had individual tuition with the saxophonist Julian Arguëlles and was awarded a Post Graduate Jazz Saxophone Performance Certificate.

I am a keen teacher as well as performer and since my first music pupils in 1997 have ensured that I am always improving and developing as a musician and teacher. I attend ABRSM teaching seminars on a regular basis, was inspired by Lucinda Mackworth-Young's 'Music Movement and Mind' course in 2002 and completed the ABRSM 'Being an Effective Teacher' online course in 2011. I am a member of the ISM, subscribe to the Clarinet and Saxophone Magazine, the ABRSM's 'Libretto' and regularly add to my collection of teaching books and repertoire to keep my ideas fresh. I was a teaching assistant at Woodstock CE Primary School from 2008-2103 which I thoroughly enjoyed. This has given me additional teaching experience and insight into the learning process and different learning styles.

I have done some orchestral playing in the past but am currently working on solo classical and jazz/folk repertoire on flute and clarinet, playing in local venues and churches.

Professional Development

I was awarded an ARSM diploma in clarinet performance with distinction in July 2017 as well as an ABRSM Diploma in clarinet teaching in 2012. I have been taking lessons both in music teaching and clarinet with Paul Harris, an internationally renowned music educationalist, clarinetist, composer and author for 7 years which enabled me to reach a new level of teaching and playing and, in turn, has benefited my students. I continue to learn with Paul and various other mentors and never stop learning and developing!

I have been learning the flute intensively for four years and In October 2017 I had a week's flute tuition with Dana Morgan in The Hebrides, having previously attended 'Autumn Clarinets' and the Malvern Winds Summer Course in 2014 and 2016 respectively. I am currently working towards a Grade 8 level recital award on the flute.
